Message from the Director
The Center for Population Biology is dedicated to understanding the origins and maintenance diversity of life on earth through research in ecology and evolutionary biology. This challenge has taken on a new sense of urgency given the threats to this diversity from human activities such as habitat alteration, climate change, and overharvesting of wild populations. Founded in 1989, the Center currently includes 41 faculty, 12 postdoctoral scientists, and 57 graduate researchers from across 3 colleges at UC Davis. The goals of the Center are to foster novel collaborations among faculty in the center and to provide support for innovative research by graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. To do this we host a variety of activities including a host of workshops, seminars and other activities in support of our mission.
New for Fall 2010:
Our graduate students are planning a workshop on Spatial Ecology in the winter quarter. We will be searching for a new postdoctoral fellow in the winter (call will be released in December, applications due mid-January). In the Spring we will have our annual competition for research and travel support for CPB student affiliates. All year, we have our weekly seminar series, which features research talks by faculty, student and postdoctoral members of the Center. The current schedule is posted here: CPB Seminars. This year we have increased the emphasis on local speakers by (1) asking students to nominate UCD faculty to give seminars and (2) encouraging students to give seminars on “in progress” research in order to foster collaborations among faculty and students. In addition, our postdoctoral fellow will be presenting a workshop on a topic to be determined, likely in the spring quarter.
